Direct flights to Turkey taking off

Monday, February 22, 2010

Australia has signed an air services agreement with Turkey that ensures direct commercial flights between the two nations...

Until now Australians wishing to visit Turkey needed to travel via a third country such as Singapore.

Under the agreement finalised ahead of this year's Anzac Day events at Gallipoli, airlines from both nations can operate up to five direct flights each week.

Carriers from both countries can also enter into code-sharing arrangements with the airlines of a third country to provide services between the two nations via a third destination.

"The new agreement marks further progress towards the government's objective, as outlined in our aviation white paper, of an open and competitive international aviation market," a statement from Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said.

During 2009, of the more than 60,000 people to travel between Australia and Turkey, 80 per cent of those were Australians.
